First Reactions: Magical Girl Raising Project

Ever since Puella Magi Madoka Magica came out, we've had a lot of magical girl shows that have decided to attempt to capture its success. Some of them succeed, others seem to sometimes fail. A good example of a few are Mahou Shoujo of the End, or Magical Girl Apocalypse as it's called in the United States, Mahou Shoujo Site and Yuki Yuna is a Hero. It's not at all surprising to hear that there's another brutal deconstruction where you get to see magical girls go through suffering and pain.

I'm a fan of the show "Puella Magi Madoka Magica" and "Danganronpa," so hearing that there is a show that is similar to that of both franchises, I became immediately curious. There was a show similar to two franchises that I adore? I immediately decided to check it out as soon as I possibly could.

This my friends is my first reactions to Magical Girl Raising Project: Episode 1.

In this world, there is a game on smartphones, a game called "Magical Girl Raising Project." Apparently, if you play it, there is a slight chance that you would become a magical girl yourself! Immediately, in my head, I was thinking about the memes that would probably come from people playing the game. Having read the synopsis and the comparisons people made, I was curious and decided to load it up.

What I was treated to was a scene of dead bodies of magical girls and some giant monsters within the first minutes.

Personally, I like that fact. It's nice to know what we'll be treated to instead of being forced to wait for suffering and pain. Madoka's effect on the industry has made it so that we'll have to wait for those things to happen, instead we know it's going to be hard.

The question becomes why should we care that it's going to be hard?

We get introduced to the opening and we're thrust into how the series plays out. Like noted before, there is a game that people play called "Magical Girl Raising Project." Our main character, Koyuki Himekawa, has always been a fan of the magical girl genre in anime and as it turns out, an old childhood friend, who is a boy, also was a fan.

It is then we are informed that there have been rumors of magical girls going around helping people. However, they were simple rumors at best.

It is then Koyuki Himekawa was chosen to become a magical girl!

By the mascot character who looks like the lovechild of Monokuma and Kyubey.

Hey, I did say that this show has elements of both Madoka and Danganronpa
She chooses to become a magical girl and she becomes Snow White, pictured in the first picture as the main protagonist, whose power mostly is that she can hear anybody who's in need. A useful tool for a classical magical girl. Sadly, this show is not a classical magical girl show. As evidenced by a particular character.

Yeah, this person right here, La Pucelle? Technically, she's a he. Apparently, when they ask for magical girls, they really emphasize on the girl part of the series. However, Souta Kishibe, as his real name is in the series, doesn't mind the fact that he becomes a girl at all. They love the fact they can finally become a magical girl as their dream once was.

The two of them have a discussion when we are informed of the plot twist in the last episode.

The magical girl population needs to be cut in half because it's becoming a strain to the system. (They really should have patched the game then.) We are treated to our main character being in complete shock and then the episode ends.

Personally, I'm curious where this will end up. Is this going to be another copycat of Madoka Magica or will there a bit more creativity put into this series? Who knows.

All I know is, that I'm going to give this show a watch regardless of where it ends up.
